Lloret de Mar :)

In 2013 I went to Lloret de Mar in Spain to celebrate my A-Levels with four of my best friends in class.
We went all the way from Austria to Spain by bus and all in all it lasts 30 hours. The journey by bus was very exhausting because all hurts - the back, the legs and especially the bottom.

We did not do a lot in Lloret de Mar except of making party, going shopping and relaxing on the beach. The water was very cold and it was always windy. Therefore I did not put suncreme on myself and so I get a very bad sunburn. We also went to Barcelona for one day. I have never seen such a big and great city before.
On the last day I decided to plait all my hair. It was very funny because at home nobody recognized who I am.

I also made a Catamerantour and we visited a lot of places and a very beautiful bay with blue water and white sand. When the Catameran stopped we were allowed to spring in the water - first I was afraid of springing because it was very high, but after a time I sprang and then I did it five or four times.

It was my best journey I have made and I want to go to Lloret de Mar a second time.

London :)

In 2012 I went to London with my class for 6 days. We went by train from Liens to Klagenfurt and then we flew from Klagenfurt to London. The flight was very exciting for me because it was my first flight ever. In London we slept in a hostel, which was a bit dirty and the rooms were very small.

We went to all the famous streets and places in London like Piccadilly Circus, London Eye or Madame Tussauds.  My favorite place was Madame Tussauds because I liked it to stay beside all these famous persons and the figures are all made very well and real.

In the evening we went to a lot of Irish pubs and we drunk a lot of Guinness. I have not many memories of this journey but all in all I had a very beautiful time with my friends there and I would go there for a second time.

Louisiana Purchase

The Louisiana Purchase is the greatest real estate deal ever.
In 1803, France (under Napoléon) sold the territory of Louisiana to the US for just $15 million. The addition of that territory doubled the size of the United States immediately, making it one of the largest nations in the world (at that time).
The land purchased also included parts of what is now Alberta and Saskatchewan in Canada.

Napoléon needed money and saw selling the land to the U.S. as an opportunity to block the power of England on another front, so selling "Louisiane" was worth it to him.

In 1804, officers William Clark and Meriwether Lewis, along with over 40 other men, set off from St. Louis along the Missouri River towards the Pacific Coast. Their task was to study the flora and fauna and the Native American tribes living there.
They were accompanied by a young Indian girl called Sacagawea. She helped them trade for horses and also translated for them. Sacagawea even cooked and collected berries for medicine during the expedition. Her presence was especially useful when the group came across tribes that had never seen white people before. Having a Native woman with them helped to make the tribes they met feel more at ease.

Register

Registers are present in every language.  In the US, you can hear the difference in the language when you listen to someone from New York and someone from Texas. Same language – two different dialects.
In Germany they all speak German, but there is quite a difference in the language between the northern part and the southern part of the country.

Register refers to the type of language you use for a given situation and can cut across language, dialect and accent. For example, compare the two sentences:

1.    1.    Some follow got run over and killed by a lorry in the high street yesterday.
2.     2.   A man died yesterday following a collision with a heavy goods vehicle in a busy town centre.

The first one would probably be said in a conversation by someone talking with friends. The other is the way it would probably be reported in a newspaper.

Intimate register is the highly informal language used among family members and close friends. It may include private vocabulary known only to two people or a small group.

Casual register is the informal language of a broader but still well-defined social group.  It includes slang, elliptical and elided sentences and frequent interruption.

Consultative register is moderately formal language that marks a mentor-protégé or expert-novice relationship, such as that between a doctor and a patient or a teacher and a student.

Formal register is language between strangers or in a technical context.

Frozen register is ritualistic or traditional, as in religious ceremonies or legal proceedings.
